Winged Hussars: Adding to my chaos dwarf cavalry

G'day M8's, who wouldn't want winged lancers in their force?  Bloody Empire drongos shouldn't have all the fun.  But how to add them to my chaos army?  Well grab a stiff drink and sit down and have a read. ;)
Gawd Grove moawr Cavalry?

After playing Kellerman's Revenge, I really enjoyed fielding a cavalry army. Blue ran his new pike block, and is planning on doing another.  He really liked how they worked on the cavalry, and I liked the challenge.  So it didn't take much convincing to start thinking about adding another unit.

Bloo's pikes aren't they lovely!

Well the amazing Westfalia miniatures showed this off on Facebook, and the idea bored itself into my brain.  I must field a unit of chaos dwarf cavalry winged hussars.

Unfortunately this mini was only a one off, and I had missed the kickstarter so what to do.  Well I hurried off to TAG miniatures to see what I could figure out with their lovely range of John Pickford dwarfs sculpted in a great old school look.

I already had the raven knights, and the bear hammers, so that left the boar knights  I figured if I painted it correctly the wings would look like a big boar bristle going down their back.

So there you have it.  The unit will be Rawchee's Razorbacks, and they add a little bit of flare to Vasken's Goonie Horde.

I always liked how the ochre and red Kislev horses are always painted.  So tried to match that as best as I could on these hairy little ponies and their big bridles.  The models are already busy in a good way, so I didn't want to over do it with a bunch of fancy pantz painting either.  I also needed them to match all my other units to a degree.
I really intended to go with black armor, but in the end the red looked way better beside the other units.  The wings turned out just like I wanted them too.  Apparently historically the wings made quite a racket when they charged.  So possibly I might want to have them cause fear or some sort of bonus for that.
Rawchee's favorite saying is "Don't be a Can't!", and I can always use a Can.

Some of you also might have noticed I've touched up the Bear Hammerers and Black Vasken a bit.
I updated the Bears barding to match the Raven Knights. As well as sprucing up their beards.
Vasken's update was mostly on Kringer getting a new mane and tail color, as well as a shiny new horn.  I also raised Vaskens pennant to match the Heartbreakers and gave him a proper checked shield which you can see better in the pics below.

Hey when you level up you get new skins and hair color choices. ;)

Here is the full cavalry brigade.  Vollrath and his infantry have been left at home for guard duty this campaign it looks like.
I am toying with the rules a bit.  In 3ed.  Dwarf cavalry get no charge or weapon bonus.  After playing against Bloo the last battle it just didnt feel right.  So we talked about giving them back their bonus's.  I mean they already have the reduced movement.  I'll try it out a few times and see how it goes.

The plan is to run 2 divisions with McMeatloaf or Kellerman in charge of one wing, and Vasken commanding the other.  Of course Snarf tags along everywhere Vasken goes.  These will be seeing the field very soon as their thundering hooves sound a crescendo for Violence in the Valley.

  1. An Army in about 40 figures.
Most of the time, that's my preference since the footprint is smaller, there is more maneuvering room around a 6'x4' table.

That cav brigade really looks impressive.

    1. Thanks Major. Ya this army is about my limit. Anything larger tends to get a bit unwieldy, and special rules begin to get missed.

  2. God damn and jaysus this makes me hot in my "no" place! You've knocked it out of the park on this one buddy, both in quality and turnaround, and it's lovely to see that Rawchees world view runs quite close to my own ;)

  4. Faaaack..... These remind me of that warm sweaty feeling you get after getting off the plane after an 11 hour flight.

Loving that you're naming them too after the Oldhammer crew. Superb mate, really.

  6. You sir are a doer! That is Alpha painter levels of production. I'm quite honored to be the banner bearer for Rawchee. I was also completely unaware that there were any rules for Dwarf cav in 3rd ed.
